Image & Design Prompts – how to use them

A good image prompt resembles a photographer’s shooting brief: subject, setting, lighting, composition, color and style are stated separately. Use concrete words instead of vague ones like “a nice logo”: “soft daylight, white background, top-down shot”. These prompts do not produce the image themselves; they write the brief for image tools.

Rules and output rights differ between AI image tools. Read the tool’s terms before commercial use. Do not try to imitate someone’s brand, real people’s faces or protected characters. Do not use brand assets like logos unless you are sure they are legally distinct.

  • State subject, lighting, composition, color and style separately.
  • Say what you do not want: “no text, no logo”.
  • Generate several results with the same prompt and pick the best.
  • Read the tool’s terms before commercial use.

Example: a weak prompt and a strong prompt

Weak prompt

Make a nice product photo.

Strong prompt

Write an image prompt for a product photo. Product: handmade ceramic coffee cup. Background: light wooden table. Use a clean, e-commerce-ready style and do not add text or a logo.

Sample output generated with Claude

Prompt: “Handmade ceramic coffee cup on a light wooden table, soft natural window light from the left, shallow depth of field, top-three-quarter angle, neutral warm color palette, clean minimal e-commerce product photography, sharp focus on the cup, no text, no logo, no hands”

Tip: add the cup’s real color and finish (matte, glazed) to the prompt and the result will look more like your product.

This output is an example from running the strong prompt above with Claude. Results can differ in ChatGPT, other tools or at other times; check the output yourself before using it.

Frequently asked questions

Do these prompts create the image themselves?

No. They write a brief you can give to an image tool such as Midjourney or DALL·E. Some tools like ChatGPT can also generate the image directly.

Can I use generated images commercially?

It depends on the tool. Each tool has its own commercial-use and credit rules; read them before use.

How do I make it look like my real product?

Put color, material and size in the prompt. In tools with a reference-image feature, give your own photo as the reference.
