PDF Compare Tool
Upload two PDF files and see the differences in their text content, page by page.
PDF Compare speeds up a step that often comes up right before sharing a PDF or moving it into another system. PDF Compare lets you complete this PDF task right in your browser, without installing separate software. The whole process happens locally in your browser; nothing is sent to a server.
Step-by-step
- Choose the older or reference version of the document under PDF A.
- Choose the newer version under PDF B. Keeping that order makes it easier to tell what was added and what was removed.
- Click Compare. The files are processed in your browser.
- Go through the text differences listed page by page and note the ones that matter.
When is it useful?
It helps when someone sends you a revised contract, quote or specification and you want to know what changed without reading both versions side by side. This is especially handy when the other party turned off tracked changes or only sent a PDF, since a quietly reworded clause is easy to miss by eye.
Example
Your landlord sends an updated office lease and says only the dates were corrected. Load last year's lease as PDF A and the new one as PDF B, then compare. Alongside the dates, you might find that a sentence about the annual rent increase was reworded on one page. Spotting that before signing gives you time to raise it with the landlord instead of discovering it a year later.
How does the comparison work?
The tool extracts the text from each PDF page by page and compares pages that have the same number. When pages differ, the result shows the first 80 characters of that page from both versions, so the result is a pointer to where a difference is, not a full line-by-line diff.
Practical tips
- Look at the page numbers in the result first, then check those pages in both documents by eye.
- Not every flagged page is a real content change; whitespace or line-break differences can also show up as differences.
- If you have the Word or other source file, its track-changes feature gives much more detail.
Common mistakes
- Comparing a scanned (image) PDF; with no text there is no result.
- Treating every result as a real change when the page counts differ.
- Relying only on this tool for a legal document.
Things to keep in mind
- Scanned documents contain images of text, not selectable text, so there is nothing for the tool to compare.
- Because comparison is page by page, a page inserted in the middle of the new version can make every later page look different. Allow for that shift when reading the results.
- Only text is compared. Changes to fonts, colors, images or signatures won't show up.
- For documents with legal weight, treat the result as a first pass and get a lawyer's review where it matters.
