Meta Description Checker - DigiKitApp

Check whether your meta description length is SEO-friendly.

When should you use this?

Use this before publishing, to check whether a meta description is short enough to display in full on Google without truncation.

When shouldn't you use this?

Even if the length is right, this tool doesn't judge whether the description is relevant to the target keyword or compelling enough to drive clicks, you need to evaluate that yourself.

Step-by-step

  1. Paste your description into the Meta description field. For a live page, copy it from the description tag in the page source or from the SEO field in your CMS.
  2. Click Run.
  3. Check the reported length and whether it falls within the suggested range.
  4. If it runs long, trim it so the key point comes first. If it is short, add a sentence about what the visitor will find on the page, then run it again.

Example

You wrote a description for a dental clinic's implant page, ending with the phone number and street address. The checker says it is over the suggested length, which means the contact details at the end are exactly the part most likely to be cut off in search results. A better version opens with what the page covers, such as the treatment stages, recovery time and how to book, and leaves the address for the page itself.

What does the meta description do?

The meta description is the short summary shown under the title in search results. It is not a direct ranking factor but can affect click-through rate. The ideal length is about 150-160 characters; more is cut off. Descriptions that honestly summarise the page, contain the searched phrase and end with a call to action get more clicks.

When writing descriptions

  • Write a different description for every page; duplicates carry no value.
  • If the searched phrase appears in the text the search engine may show it in bold.
  • Do not use misleading descriptions that do not match the content.
  • Google may replace your description with a part of the page it picks if needed.

Things to keep in mind

  • Search engines don't always show the description you wrote. They may pull a different snippet from the page to match the query, though a strong description makes yours more likely to appear.
  • Truncation depends on pixel width more than character count. A line full of wide letters like W and M can be cut sooner than another with the same number of characters.
  • Avoid reusing one description across many pages. Category and product pages each deserve a sentence written for them.
  • Mobile results can show less text, so make sure the first few words make sense on their own.
