Character Counter - DigiKitApp
Show character, non-space character and word counts for text.
When should you use this?
Use this when you need to check whether a text's character count exceeds a specific limit (a tweet, an SMS, a form field).
When shouldn't you use this?
If word count matters more than character count (for an article, say), a word-focused tool would be more relevant.
Step-by-step
- Paste the text you want to measure into the Text field. Copying from Word, Google Docs or an email works fine.
- Click Run.
- Read the three values in the result area: total characters, characters without spaces, and word count.
- If you need to trim, edit the text right in the field, click Run again and compare the new count with the old one.
Example
You're writing a product description for an online store, and the admin panel caps the meta description at a fixed number of characters. Paste your draft and run it. If the total is over the limit, cut filler adjectives and repeated words first, then recount after each edit until you land just under the cap. The no-spaces count is handy for translation or assignment work where the fee or limit is based on that number instead.
Job application forms are another good use. Fields like "Tell us about yourself" often cut text off silently once it passes the limit. Counting here first means you catch a sentence that would end mid-word before you hit submit.
Why does character count matter?
Many platforms have character limits: in search results the title is cut at about 60 and the description at about 150-160 characters; a single SMS is limited to 160 characters (fewer with special characters). The counter shows characters with and without spaces, words and lines together.
When counting
- Do not confuse counts with and without spaces; check which one the platform uses.
- Emoji and some special characters can count as more than one character.
- Word counts can differ slightly by language and separator.
- If you are writing close to a limit, leave a few characters of margin.
Things to keep in mind
- Emoji and some special symbols can be counted differently on different platforms. If you're right at the limit, double-check with the counter on the site you're posting to.
- In SMS, accented or non-Latin characters can switch the message encoding and lower how many characters fit in one message. For bulk SMS, trust your provider's count.
- Line breaks and trailing spaces count as characters too. If a blank line came along when you copied, the number will be slightly higher than you expect.
- Word count is based on spaces, so hyphenated terms and contractions may be counted differently by different tools.
