How to Merge and Split PDF Files: Page Order, Ranges and Tips

Steps for combining several PDFs into one or pulling specific pages out of a PDF, how to write page ranges, and common problems.

An application might ask you to send your ID copy, diploma and CV as a single PDF. Or you might need to forward just two pages of an 80-page report. Both take a few minutes, as long as you watch a few details.

Merging PDFs

  1. Put the files you want to combine in one folder.
  2. If order matters, number the file names: 01-id.pdf, 02-diploma.pdf, 03-cv.pdf. It is the most reliable way to keep the order in the file picker and in the result.
  3. Select the files in the PDF merge tool and merge them. The result downloads as merged.pdf.
  4. Open the file and check the pages are in the right order.

If the order still comes out wrong, use the reorder PDF pages tool to arrange the pages the way you want.

Splitting a PDF and extracting pages

The PDF split tool pulls the pages you choose out into a new PDF. Write the page range like this:

  • 3: page 3 only
  • 1-4: all pages from 1 to 4
  • 1-3,7,10-12: several ranges, separated by commas

The page number is the position shown by your PDF reader, which may differ from the page number printed in the document. Cover pages and tables of contents make that difference very common.

Common problems

  • Password-protected PDF: A file with an opening password cannot be merged until the password is removed. If the file is yours, remove the password first.
  • File too large: PDFs made from scans grow quickly. If the result exceeds an email attachment limit, try the PDF compressor after merging.
  • Sideways pages: If a scanned page came out landscape, fix it with the PDF rotate tool.
  • Form fields and signatures: Merging fillable forms or digitally signed documents can invalidate the signature. If you must send an officially signed document unchanged, send it as a separate file.

Privacy

ID cards, payslips and medical reports contain personal data. DigiKitApp's PDF tools process files in your browser, and your files are not uploaded to a server. If you use another service, check where the files are processed and how long they are kept.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my merged file so large?

A merged PDF is roughly the sum of its parts. Scanned pages and high-resolution images make it grow fast. If you hit an upload limit, run the result through a PDF compressor.

Can I merge a password-protected PDF?

Most tools cannot process a file with an open password until it is entered. If the document is yours or you have permission to use it, remove the password first, then merge.

I only want to change the page order. Do I need to split and merge again?

No. A PDF page reorder tool lets you drag the pages into a new order and save them in one go.
