Tip Calculator - DigiKitApp

Calculate tip amount and per-person share from a bill.

When should you use this?

Use this when you need to quickly work out a tip amount at a chosen percentage, and split it per person.

When shouldn't you use this?

In some countries or establishments, a service charge may already be included in the bill; check the receipt for a "service charge" line before adding a tip on top.

Step-by-step

  1. Type the total from the receipt into 'Bill amount'.
  2. Enter the percentage you want to leave in 'Tip %'. The rate is entirely your call; the tool doesn't assume one.
  3. Put the number of people splitting the bill in 'People'. If you're paying alone, enter 1.
  4. Click 'Run' to see the tip amount and each person's share together.

Example

Four friends finish dinner with a bill of 80 and want to leave a 15 percent tip. The tip comes to 12, the total to 92, and split four ways that's 23 each. The usual mistake when people split at the table is to divide the bill and forget the tip, or to let one person quietly cover it. Working both out together avoids that.

If you're leaving the tip in cash, round your share up to a convenient figure. If you're paying by card, it's worth asking whether the tip can be added to the card payment before you hand it over.

How is a tip calculated?

Tip amount = Bill × tip percentage. The total is the bill plus the tip; for a per-person amount you divide the total by the number of people. For example a 10% tip on a 600 bill is 60, making 660; split among four it is 165 each.

Tips for tipping maths

  • Tipping customs vary by country; in Turkey about 5-10% is common when service is not included, while in the US it is usually higher.
  • If a service charge is already on the bill an extra tip is not required; check the receipt.
  • Decide whether you calculate the tip on the total with VAT or before it.
  • If everyone should pay for what they ate rather than splitting equally, use a different method.

Things to keep in mind

  • Decide whether to tip on the amount before or after a discount or voucher. On a heavily discounted bill, the difference is noticeable.
  • An even split isn't always fair if people ordered very differently. In that case, enter each person's own total with People set to 1.
  • Tipping customs vary a lot between countries. A quick look at local habits before you travel saves an awkward moment.
  • Because of rounding, the per-person amounts may not add up to the exact total. Whoever collects the money can cover the few cents.
