Text Cleaner - DigiKitApp
Remove extra whitespace and empty lines from text.
When should you use this?
Use this when a text has unnecessary spaces, line breaks, or invisible characters (often from being copied from another source) and you need to clean it up.
When shouldn't you use this?
Be careful if you want to keep the text's formatting (bold, italic); some cleaning operations reduce it to plain text, and you can lose rich formatting.
Step-by-step
- Copy the text from its source. Text taken from PDFs, web pages, emails and chat apps usually needs the most cleanup.
- Paste it into the Text field.
- Click Run.
- Look over the result, especially whether paragraph breaks are where you want them, then copy it to wherever it's going.
Example
You're copying a section of a regulation from a PDF into a report. When you paste it, there are double and triple spaces between words, random blank lines every few lines, and indents at the start of lines. Running it through the cleaner collapses the extra spaces to one, drops the stray blank lines, and the text drops neatly into your report template. The same step helps when an address or product description pasted into a web form fails a match because of spaces you can't see.
When is text cleaning needed?
Copied text often carries extra spaces, line breaks, needless blank lines and invisible characters. Content taken from a PDF, a web page or an email brings these along. Cleaned text looks neater and is less likely to cause problems when pasted into a form, a database or a content management system.
Tips for cleaning text
- Keep a copy of the original first; cleaning cannot be undone.
- If formatting (bold, lists) matters, converting to plain text loses it.
- Use cleaning carefully on code or tables where whitespace is meaningful.
- Before pasting the result, review the line starts in particular.
Things to keep in mind
- Blank lines between paragraphs may be removed too. If you need that separation, check the output and put the breaks back where they belong.
- Don't run code, YAML or Python through it. Where indentation carries meaning, collapsing whitespace can break things.
- For poems, address blocks or tables where line layout matters, compare the result against the original.
- Text from PDFs often has words split across lines with a hyphen. You'll still need to read through and rejoin those yourself.
