Temperature Converter - DigiKitApp
Convert between Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin.
When should you use this?
Use this when you need a quick conversion between Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin.
When shouldn't you use this?
Before rounding the result and using it directly, think about how many decimal places you actually need; in a scientific calculation, rounding to a whole number can make a meaningful difference.
Step-by-step
- Type the temperature into Value. Negative numbers and decimals are fine.
- Choose the unit you're starting from in From unit: C (Celsius), F (Fahrenheit) or K (Kelvin).
- Choose the unit you want in To unit.
- Click Run and round the result to whatever precision your use calls for.
Example
A European recipe says to bake at 180 °C and your oven dial is in Fahrenheit. Enter 180, pick C as the source and F as the target, and you get 356 °F, so 350 °F on the dial is close enough. The formulas are worth knowing: multiply Celsius by 9/5 and add 32 to get Fahrenheit, or subtract 32 and multiply by 5/9 to go back. Kelvin is Celsius plus 273.15. Normal body temperature, 37 °C, works out to 98.6 °F. The same steps help with an imported thermometer, an aquarium heater or a weather app set to a unit you don't think in.
Temperature units
Celsius (°C), Fahrenheit (°F) and Kelvin (K) are the most common temperature scales. The formulas are: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32, °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9, K = °C + 273.15. For example 0 °C = 32 °F = 273.15 K and 100 °C = 212 °F = 373.15 K; at −40 degrees Celsius and Fahrenheit are equal.
When converting temperatures
- Fahrenheit is mostly used in the US; it is handy for weather and recipes.
- Kelvin is written without a degree sign; absolute zero is 0 K.
- When converting a temperature difference the 32 offset is not added, only the 9/5 ratio applies.
- For everyday use such as oven temperature, rounding is usually enough.
Things to keep in mind
- Kelvin is an absolute scale with no negative values. 0 K, or -273.15 °C, is the lowest possible temperature, so a negative Kelvin figure means something went wrong.
- Kelvin is written without a degree sign: 300 K, not 300 °K.
- A temperature difference converts differently from a temperature reading. A change of 10 degrees Celsius equals a change of 18 degrees Fahrenheit, not 50 °F.
- At -40 the Celsius and Fahrenheit scales read the same, which makes a handy sanity check.
