Adding page numbers to a PDF
Documents you merge after scanning, assignments or reports look tidier with page numbers. This tool writes a number at the bottom of every page; your file never leaves your device.
How to use it
- Choose your PDF file.
- Pick the position: bottom center, bottom right or bottom left.
- Enter the number to start from (default 1).
- Choose the format: “1, 2, 3” or number/total such as “1 / 10”.
- Press “Add numbers and download”; the numbered PDF downloads.
Formats
| Format | How it looks (10-page file, page 3) |
|---|---|
| Number only | 3 |
| Number / total | 3 / 10 |
Common uses
- Numbering scanned and merged pages
- Numbering assignments, theses or reports before submission
- Starting from 2 so the cover page is not counted
Things to keep in mind
- Encrypted PDFs cannot be processed; remove the password first.
- A number can overlap text or images near the bottom edge.
- On rotated pages the number may appear in a different corner from the visible one; check the result after downloading.
- Numbers use a standard font at 10 pt; font and size cannot be changed.
- Your original file is unchanged; the result downloads as a new file.
Privacy
Your file is not uploaded; it is processed in your browser, so you can use it comfortably for personal or confidential documents.
Should the cover and contents pages be numbered?
In reports and theses, the cover page is usually left unnumbered, and front matter such as the table of contents is often numbered separately. If the institution or school you are submitting to has a style guide, check it first.
If you want the cover to stay unnumbered, there is a practical route: split off the cover with the PDF split tool, add numbers to the remaining pages, then join the two files again with the PDF merge tool.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add page numbers to a PDF?
Choose your PDF, set the position (bottom center, right or left), the starting number and the format, then press the button. The numbered PDF downloads automatically.

What are the limits?
Encrypted PDFs cannot be processed. A number can overlap content near the bottom edge. On rotated pages the number may appear in a different corner from the visible one. Numbers are added in a standard font at 10 pt.
