Number to Words Converter

Convert a number or money amount into words, with plain, title case or uppercase output.

How numbers are written in words

The tool writes numbers in standard American English, without "and" between hundreds and tens.

  • Tens above twenty are hyphenated: 21 → twenty-one.
  • Groups are named thousand, million, billion and trillion: 1,250,000 → one million two hundred fifty thousand.
  • Decimals are read after "point", digit by digit: 12.5 → twelve point five.
  • Money mode reads whole units and cents separately: 1,250.75 → one thousand two hundred fifty dollars and seventy-five cents.

How to use it

  1. Type a number or amount (e.g. 1250.75 or 1,250,000).
  2. Choose "Number" or "Money amount".
  3. Pick plain, Title Case or UPPERCASE output and press Run.

Things to keep in mind

  • The money mode uses dollars and cents as wording. For other currencies, use the number mode and add the currency name yourself.
  • Cheques and legal documents may require a specific style; check the issuer's rules.
  • Only the first two decimal places are used in money mode.

Where are amounts in words needed?

Amounts in words are used on cheques, contracts, invoices, receipts and notarised documents to reduce the risk of altered or mistaken figures. A digit is easy to change, while a written amount is harder to tamper with, so when both are present the written amount usually prevails. Use the tool to prepare the text quickly, then check that it matches the figure on your document exactly.
