What Is My IP
Shows the public IP address your browser is connecting from.
When should you use this?
Use this when you need to quickly find your public IP address, for instance while setting up a firewall rule or granting IP-based access to a service.
When shouldn't you use this?
This tool only shows your current public IP; most home or mobile connections have a dynamic IP that changes over time, if you need a fixed IP you'll need to request a static one from your provider.
Step-by-step
- Make sure you are on the connection you want to check. Home Wi-Fi, mobile data, an office network and a VPN will each show a different address.
- There is nothing to fill in. Just click Run.
- Copy the address shown in the result area. Four numbers separated by dots is an IPv4 address; a longer string with colons is IPv6.
- If you switch connections, say by turning a VPN on or off, reload the page and run it again.
Example
Your company's server only accepts connections from approved IP addresses, and you have started working from home. The admin asks for your public IP. Run the tool while on your home connection and send them the address so it can be added to the allowlist. If you can't connect a few days later, run it again. A different address usually means your provider assigns dynamic IPs, and the allowlist entry is now out of date.
What is an IP address?
An IP address is the network address of a device connected to the internet. At home or in the office your devices have local (private) addresses, while your network reaches the internet through a single public address. The address shown on this page is the public address websites see. It can be IPv4 (four numbers) or IPv6 (longer, with letters and digits).
Tips about IP addresses
- Your provider often changes the address from time to time (dynamic IP); a fixed IP is usually requested separately.
- If you use a VPN or proxy, the visible address is your VPN provider's.
- An IP address alone does not reveal your exact location or identity; only an approximate region and provider can be inferred.
- When sharing the address for remote access or a firewall rule, be careful about who you give it to.
Things to keep in mind
- This is not the local address in your computer's network settings, the one that often starts with 192.168. That address only means something inside your home or office network.
- With a VPN or proxy on, you see the service's server address rather than your own. That makes this a quick way to confirm a VPN is actually active.
- Mobile carriers often share one public address among many subscribers, so an IP seen on mobile data is a poor choice for IP-based access rules.
- An IP address can hint at your provider and rough location. Keep that in mind before posting a screenshot of it.
