Morse Code Translator

Type text to get Morse code, or paste Morse written with dots and dashes to get text.

How does Morse code work?

Morse code writes each letter and digit as a combination of short signals (dots) and long signals (dashes). The most frequent letters get the shortest codes: E is a single dot, T a single dash. When translating text, a space is placed between letters and / between words.

How to use it

  1. Type the text or Morse code in the box.
  2. Choose “Text to Morse” or “Morse to text”.
  3. Press Run; the result appears along with any skipped characters.

Things to keep in mind

  • Turkish letters are translated by their ASCII equivalents; no special codes are used for ç, ğ, ı, ö, ş, ü.
  • When encoding, letters are separated by a single space and words by /. Use the same layout when decoding.
  • In a real emergency call your local emergency number rather than relying on Morse code.

Timing in Morse code

Morse code is not only dots and dashes; the gaps carry meaning too. A dot lasts 1 unit and a dash 3. The gap between signals in the same letter is 1 unit, between letters 3 units, and between words 7 units.

The well-known SOS signal (··· −−− ···) is special for this reason: it is sent without gaps between the letters, as one continuous signal. If you try sending Morse with a light or a sound, sticking to these ratios helps the other person decode it correctly.

Frequently asked questions

Who invented Morse code?

Morse code was developed in the 19th century for the telegraph and is named after Samuel Morse. The international form used today (ITU) is adapted from it.

How are Turkish letters translated?

The tool converts Ç, Ğ, İ, Ö, Ş and Ü to their ASCII equivalents (C, G, I, O, S, U). So “çay” is encoded as “cay”.

How should I write Morse when decoding?

Separate letters with a single space and words with / (or three spaces). Use . for dot and - for dash. Unrecognised code appears as ?.

Which characters are supported?

Letters A-Z, digits 0-9 and basic punctuation such as . , ? ' ! / ( ) & : ; = + - _ " $ @. Other characters are skipped and listed in the result.
