Midterm and final formula
Average = Midterm × Midterm weight + Final × Final weight. Typical splits are 40/60 or 30/70; the weights must add up to 100%.
The final grade you need comes from the same formula: Needed final = (Passing grade − Midterm × Midterm weight) ÷ Final weight.
How to use it
- Enter the midterm grade and its weight (for example 40). The final weight is 100 minus that.
- If you have not taken the final yet, leave it blank to see the grade you need.
- Enter the final grade as well to get your average and pass/fail result. The passing grade defaults to 50.

With a midterm of 20 you have earned only 8 of the 40 midterm points, so the 60% final must supply the rest: a 70.
Things to keep in mind
- Some departments also require a minimum final grade, or treat make-up exams differently. Check your regulations.
- If you also have homework, projects or attendance, use the average calculator with weights.
- Curved or relative grading makes any simple average only an approximation.
Using it for planning
When midterm results come out, run the tool with the final left blank: it tells you the grade you need on the final to pass. If that number is above 100, passing on the final alone is impossible and make-up exams or other rules come into play. If it is low, your final target is comfortable. Try different passing grades (50, 60) to plan for conditional passing or relative grading.

Average = midterm × midterm weight + final × final weight. With a 40% midterm and 60% final, a 60 and a 70 give 66.

Is there a minimum final grade rule?
