Length Converter - DigiKitApp
Convert between length units like meters, kilometers, feet, miles.
When should you use this?
Use this when you need a quick conversion between length units, meters, feet, inches.
When shouldn't you use this?
If you're doing precise engineering calculations, check the rounding precision of the result; this tool is built for everyday use, sub-millimeter precision work may need a specialized tool.
Step-by-step
- Enter the number you want to convert in the Value field. For decimals, double-check which separator you typed.
- Pick the unit you are starting from in From unit: m, km, cm, mm, ft, yd or mi.
- Pick the unit you want in To unit.
- Click Run and read the result. To see the same value in another unit, change only To unit and run it again.
Example
A European furniture listing says a sofa is 210 cm wide and you want to know if it fits a wall you measured in feet. Enter 210, set From unit to cm and To unit to ft, and you get just under 6.9 ft. Going the other way, a 5 ft gap is exactly 152.4 cm, because one foot is defined as 0.3048 m. The same exactness applies to the mile: 1 mi is 1.609344 km, so a 10 km race is a little over 6.2 miles.
How length units relate
The tool converts between metres, kilometres, centimetres, millimetres, feet (ft), yards (yd) and miles (mi). The basic equalities are 1 ft = 0.3048 m, 1 yd = 0.9144 m (3 ft) and 1 mi = 1609.344 m. In the metric system units are powers of ten, while feet, yards and miles are traditional units used in the US and UK.
Practical examples and tips
- 100 yards is 91.44 m; 1 mile is about 1.609 km.
- 6 feet is about 182.9 cm; useful when converting height.
- The nautical mile (1.852 km) and the inch are not in this tool; do not confuse them.
- In precise engineering work, check the effect of rounding.
Things to keep in mind
- The mi option is the statute mile. The nautical mile used at sea and in aviation is a different unit and isn't in this list.
- Inches aren't offered here. One inch is exactly 2.54 cm, so you can apply that factor by hand for screen sizes or wheel diameters.
- Converting back and forth several times and reusing the rounded output can let small errors pile up. Start each conversion from the original measurement.
- Mixed values such as 5 ft 9 in need two steps: convert the feet, convert the inches by hand, then add them.
