Average Calculator
Write one grade per line with an optional weight to get the weighted and simple averages.
Average formulas
- Simple average: sum of grades ÷ number of grades.
- Weighted average: (Grade₁ × Weight₁ + Grade₂ × Weight₂ + …) ÷ sum of weights. At university the weight is usually the course credit.
How to use it
- Write one grade per line and add its weight after a space (e.g.
85 4). - Write grades without weights on their own; they count as 1.
- Press Run to see the weighted and simple averages plus the highest and lowest grade.
Worked example
Three courses: 85 (4 credits), 70 (3 credits), 90 (2 credits).
| Course | Grade | Credits | Grade × Credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 85 | 4 | 340 |
| B | 70 | 3 | 210 |
| C | 90 | 2 | 180 |
| Total | 9 | 730 |
Weighted average: 730 ÷ 9 = 81.11. Simple average: (85+70+90) ÷ 3 = 81.67. The weighted result is lower because the highest grade belongs to the course with the fewest credits.
Things to keep in mind
- If your school uses letter grades or a 4.0 scale, convert grades to its system first. The GPA converter can turn a 100-point grade into a 4.0 value.
- If weights are exam percentages instead of credits (a 40% midterm, for instance), the same method applies: use 40 and 60 as weights.
- Rounding rules vary by institution; the official figure comes from your school.
When do you need a weighted average?
When items are not equally important, a simple average is misleading. At university a course worth 6 credits affects the result three times as much as one worth 2. The same logic applies when combining parts of one course: with homework at 20%, a project at 30% and an exam at 50%, enter the grades with weights 20, 30 and 50. Make sure all grades are on the same scale; entering one on a 100-point scale and another on a 4-point scale makes the result meaningless.
Frequently asked questions
How is a weighted average calculated?
Multiply each grade by its weight (credit), add the products and divide by the sum of weights: Σ(grade × weight) ÷ Σ weight.
What is the difference between simple and weighted average?
A simple average treats every grade equally. In a weighted average a high-credit course moves the result more.
What if I leave out the weight?
A line without a weight counts as 1; with no weights at all both averages are the same.
Can I enter decimal grades?
Yes, write 80.5 or 80,5.
