Text Summarizer - DigiKitApp

Summarize a long text down to its key sentences.

When should you use this?

When you want to summarize a long text, this tool prepares a ready-made prompt template for having an AI chat tool do the summarizing.

When shouldn't you use this?

This tool doesn't summarize the text itself, the AI chat tool you paste it into does; if you already have an AI tool open, just pasting the text and saying "summarize this" might be faster.

Step-by-step

  1. Paste the text you want summarized into the Text field. If you copied it from a PDF or a web page, clean out page numbers, menu labels and footnote markers first.
  2. Click Run. The result area shows a request that contains your text, ready for an AI chat tool to summarize.
  3. Copy the request into the AI tool you use. If you want a particular length or format, such as five bullet points or one paragraph, add that to the end yourself.
  4. Compare the summary with the original to make sure nothing important was dropped.

Example

You have long meeting minutes and need to send the team a short update. Paste the minutes in, run the tool, then add a line at the end of the request such as: list the decisions and who owns each task under a separate heading. Now the AI returns not just a general summary but the to-do list your team actually needs. Since the minutes mention names and dates, it's still on you to check those came through correctly before you send anything.

How does the summarizing work?

This tool really does summarize, but it is a simple summarizer and uses no AI. It splits the text into sentences at full stops, question marks and exclamation marks, counts how often each word appears in the whole text, and scores each sentence by the total frequency of its words. It picks roughly the top 35% of sentences (rounded up, at least one) and joins them in their original order. Example: “Cats sleep a lot. Cats are very curious animals and explore everything. Dogs bark. Cats and kittens often play with string. The weather was nice.” keeps two of the five sentences: “Cats are very curious animals and explore everything. Cats and kittens often play with string.”

Limits

  • The tool does not rewrite sentences, it only selects from the original, so the summary is a verbatim extract.
  • Because scoring is based on word frequency, long sentences tend to score higher.
  • Abbreviations with a full stop, like “Dr.”, can split a sentence in the wrong place.
  • The selection ratio is fixed and cannot be changed in the interface.
  • The text is processed in your browser.

Things to keep in mind

  • AI tools may not handle a very long text in one pass, or may skim the later sections. Break chapter-length material into parts and summarize each one.
  • A summary can slip in a conclusion the original never made. Check numbers against the source in particular.
  • Don't rely on a summary alone for an exam, a contract or an official letter. It shows you where to look, it doesn't replace reading.
  • Before pasting documents covered by an NDA into a third-party AI service, check your company's rules.
