Perplexity
Perplexity positions itself more as a research engine than a classic chatbot. It shows source links alongside its answers, which makes it easier to trace a claim back to where it came from.
Use cases
It's useful for researching a current topic quickly, checking a claim against its source, or getting several sources summarized in one place.
Good to know
Citing sources is a real advantage over a plain chatbot, but it's still worth clicking through to the original link to confirm the summary represents it fairly.
Key features
Perplexity is an AI search tool that gives its answers together with the web sources it gathered. Numbered citations appear inside the answer and each number leads to its source. It is used on the web, in a mobile app and through browser access. You can deepen a research thread with follow-up questions and ask questions about files you upload. The difference between free use and the paid plans with more extensive research changes over time.
Getting better results
Write the question as a full question rather than a bare keyword and add a time frame if needed, for example "in the last year". For the claims that matter, open the cited page and check that it really says what the summary says; a summary can sometimes misrepresent or omit its source. On topics with several viewpoints, asking it to "compare the different perspectives" gives a more balanced picture.
Privacy and alternatives
Because search queries can be tied to an account, avoid putting personal or sensitive details in the question and review the data options in your account settings. Perplexity is strongest for research; for drafting long texts or developing code, ChatGPT and Claude can offer a smoother flow.
Who is it for?
Perplexity suits students, journalists and researchers who want to investigate a topic quickly, see the sources and verify claims. Producing long creative texts is not its main strength.
