ChatGPT
ChatGPT is OpenAI's general-purpose AI chat assistant. It's used for everything from writing and coding help to summarizing and translating, and it also supports image generation, voice conversation, and web browsing.
Use cases
It covers a wide range: everyday writing, debugging code, brainstorming ideas, or rewriting a piece of text in a different tone. The GPT store offers specialized versions tuned for particular tasks.
Good to know
Its answers can sometimes be wrong or incomplete (commonly called a "hallucination"), so anything current or high-stakes is worth double-checking against another source.
Key features
ChatGPT is available in the browser and in mobile apps. You can upload files and ask questions about them, have data tables interpreted, generate images and talk to it by voice. There is a free tier and paid plans with higher limits; because what is included in each plan changes over time, check OpenAI's official page for the current picture. It also has a memory feature that can carry some details across conversations, and it lets you build customized versions with your own instructions.
Getting better results
The quickest way to a good answer is a clear request: say who the text is for, how long it should be and what tone you want. Break complex jobs into steps instead of asking for everything at once; ask for a draft first, then refine with follow-ups such as "make it shorter" or "add an example". When asking for code, paste the language and the exact error message together, which noticeably improves the reply. Our Prompts section has ready-made examples.
Privacy and alternatives
The basic rule is not to type ID numbers, passwords, customer data or company secrets into any chat. In account settings you can manage whether your conversations may be used to improve the model, and you can use temporary chats that are not saved to your history. For research that needs cited sources Perplexity may fit better, and for very long documents Claude may be a better match.
Who is it for?
ChatGPT is a sound starting point for students, freelancers and teams who want writing, coding and idea generation in one place. If you need a specialist tool focused on a single job, look at the alternatives too.
