Safety and alternatives
Characters are not real experts; do not rely on their answers for health, legal or psychological support topics. Do not share personal or sensitive information. The platform has age limits and content rules that are updated from time to time, and parents should check the current rules when children use it. For general-purpose help rather than fictional chat, ChatGPT or Claude is more suitable.
Who is it for?
Character.AI suits entertainment, storytelling and role-play chats. It is not a tool designed for tasks that need accurate information, nor for study or research.

- Developer: Character Technologies, Inc.
- Character.AI ended open-ended chat for users under 18. The change began rolling out on 24 November 2025, after a transition period with daily time limits.
- Under-18 users can still view past chats, create and share Characters, scenes, videos and voices, and use tools such as AvatarFX and Imagine Chat.
- To apply these rules, Character.AI uses an in-house age assurance model combined with third-party tools such as Persona.
- A paid subscription, c.ai+, is offered alongside free use.
